How do I price my wedding photograpy packages?

Hello, I'm Linda.  I used to post a prepared price list on my website, but I found that folks would call me and ask, "if I take this package, but want you to do this instead of that, how much would it cost then?"  I finally realized that everyone has their own idea of what they want for their wedding, and rather than me trying to fit everyone into a certain "package", I will let you tell me what would make you the happiest.  In fact, when couples visit me for an initial free consultation at my studio, they arrive with some preconceived ideas of what they want, but after they look over some of my work, and what I've done for other weddings, they often alter their plans.  I often hear a lot of comments like, "Wow, you can do that?" and, "Can you take some photos for us like you did on this couple's album?"  It reminds me a little of that famous line in the Meg Ryan, Billy Crystal movie, When Harry Met Sally, where the restaurant patron says, "I'll have what she's having!"

So give me a call and we will set up a meeting were both of you tell me what you would like for the photography at your wedding, and I will customize a package that will fit into your budget.  There is no obligation, other than showing up for the scheduled meeting, and by the time you leave, you will have actually seen the type of professional work that I've done for others, as well as getting some great ideas for your own big event.

Let me say that I think I'm very reasonably priced, and in fact, my prices are considerably less than many wedding photographers in the tri-county area; but I do understand how the cost of wedding photography can be daunting, so I thought I'd share a story with you:

"A woman was strolling along a street in Paris when she came upon Pablo Picasso, easel and chair in front of him there on the sidewalk. Amazed at her good luck, she rushed up and asked him if he would paint her portrait and charge her accordingly.  Picasso said, "Of course!" and immediately began sketching her.  Within just a few minutes, he was finished and showed the woman an amazing original Picasso portrait. "That will be 5,000 francs", he said.  The woman, startled at the larger-than-expected amount of money, said, "But that only took you a few minutes!"  Picasso shook his head.  "No my dear, it took me a lifetime."

I'm not trying to put myself in the same creative category as Picasso, but the analogy of that story is the same - you are paying for a photographer's experience and creativity, not their time.  Wedding photography is an expense, that's true, coming at a time when there seems to be no end to the bills you and/or family will soon find heading your way after you proclaim your vows. But your wedding memories are very important to you and me both.  I've worked hard for over 25 years to learn my camera, to strengthen my creativity and to keep up with wedding trends, all so I can provide you with photographic images that you will be proud to show off to family, friends and co-workers for decades to come.  And isn't that worth the investment?
